A Pioneer of Women's Education in Kolkata
A School with a History
Swami Dayanand Saraswati established the Arya Samaj in Calcutta in 1885, on the conviction that educated women lay the foundation of a progressive society. Our school was born of that conviction seventeen years later.
Housed on Bidhan Sarani
The school opened in 1902 at Naitollah in central Kolkata. In 1907 it moved to these premises on Bidhan Sarani, built through the donations of eminent citizens of the day — and it has stood here ever since.
Since 1935 the school has been governed by the Arya Mahila Siksha Mandal Trust. Teaching is bilingual, in Hindi and Bengali, and the school follows the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education.
In 2002 the school marked its centenary, an occasion attended by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Life at the Mahavidyalaya
Beyond the syllabus: the competitions, the celebrations, and the ordinary afternoons that turn a building into a school. Our students take part in poster and recitation competitions, observe World Environment Day, and represent the school in classical dance and cultural performances at venues across Kolkata.
Teaching is bilingual, in Hindi and Bengali, in classes small enough that every girl is known by name. Photographs from recent events appear in the gallery above.
