Eight Years, Two Boards

A girl joins in Class V and leaves after Class XII. In between she sits two public examinations and chooses the stream that shapes what comes next.

The Shape of the School

The Mahavidyalaya teaches girls from Class V to Class XII in a bilingual medium, and has been recognised by the state boards for more than sixty years.

Classes V to XII

Eight years in one school. A girl who joins in Class V is taught by the same institution until she leaves for college.

Bilingual medium

Teaching is in Hindi and Bengali. This is unusual in north Kolkata and it is deliberate — it is how the school has always served the families around Bidhan Sarani.

Girls only

The school was founded to educate girls when few in Calcutta would, and it has admitted only girls since 1902.

The Two Boards

Public examinations are set and marked by the West Bengal boards, not by the school. Recognition for each came in stages across the last century.

WBBSE — Class X

The Madhyamik examination, taken at the end of Class X. The school has been recognised by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education since 1957.

WBCHSE — Class XII

The Higher Secondary examination, taken at the end of Class XII. A Science department was recognised in 1962, and full Higher Secondary recognition followed in 1976.

The school has not supplied Madhyamik or Higher Secondary results, so none are shown. Pass percentages and subject toppers will appear on this page once the office confirms them — invented figures would be worse than none.

Three Streams After Class X

At Higher Secondary a girl chooses one of three streams. The subject combinations available in each are set by the school and are not yet confirmed.

Science

Recognised as a department in 1962, making this the oldest of the three streams at Higher Secondary level.
